Type I and Type II Errors
A Type I error (false positive, alpha risk) occurs when a statistical test incorrectly rejects a true null hypothesis. A Type II error (false negative, beta risk) occurs when a test fails to reject a false null hypothesis. In quality engineering, these map to false alarms and missed signals.
Why It Matters
In manufacturing, Type I and Type II errors have concrete consequences. A Type I error on a control chart means stopping production to investigate a "signal" that is actually normal variation — wasting time and capacity. A Type II error means failing to detect a real process shift — allowing defective parts to reach the customer.
Traditional 3-sigma control limits are designed for a Type I error rate of 0.27% per point (for normal data). This means approximately 1 in 370 points will trigger a false alarm even when the process is perfectly stable. Over a year of continuous monitoring, false alarms accumulate and contribute to alarm fatigue.
The tradeoff between Type I and Type II errors is fundamental: tightening control limits reduces Type II errors (catches more real shifts) but increases Type I errors (more false alarms). The optimal balance depends on the relative cost of investigation versus the cost of quality escapes — and on having accurate distributional assumptions that make the stated error rates reliable.
The EntropyStat Perspective
EntropyStat produces more accurate error rate estimates because the EGDF captures the true tail behavior of the process distribution. Traditional Type I error rates are calculated assuming normality — if the data is non-normal, the actual false alarm rate can be significantly higher or lower than the designed 0.27%.
For a right-skewed distribution monitored with symmetric 3-sigma limits, the actual Type I error rate at the upper limit might be 0.5% while the lower limit is 0.05% — a 10x asymmetry that the normal model hides.
