Data-Driven Manufacturing
Data-driven manufacturing uses real-time data collection and statistical analytics to guide production decisions, replacing experience-based rules of thumb with evidence-based process control. It encompasses SPC, predictive maintenance, automated quality monitoring, and closed-loop process optimization.
Why It Matters
The transition from experience-driven to data-driven manufacturing is accelerating as sensor costs fall and computing power increases. Modern CNC machines, CMMs, and in-line gauges produce thousands of measurements per hour. The challenge is no longer data collection — it is data analysis at scale.
Most manufacturers have more data than they can analyze with traditional methods. An SPC module that requires an engineer to select a distribution, set control limits, and validate the analysis for each characteristic simply cannot keep up when 500 dimensions are being measured on every part.
Data-driven manufacturing requires analytics that are automated, scalable, and reliable without human intervention at each step. The analytical layer must integrate with existing MES/ERP systems rather than requiring a separate quality application.

Small sample statistics deals with drawing reliable conclusions from limited data — typically fewer than 30 observations. Traditional methods lose reliability with small samples because parametric distribution estimates become unstable, and the Central Limit Theorem provides weaker guarantees.
Alarm Fatigue in Quality
Alarm fatigue occurs when operators and engineers become desensitized to frequent quality alerts, leading them to ignore or dismiss genuine signals. It is typically caused by excessive false alarms from control charts with inappropriate statistical limits.
